The world lost Michael Jackson yesterday. It seemed to be the only thing anyone could talk about last night. It is sad and unexpected.
I firmly believe that he is my generation’s Elvis. Michael’s influence is all over the place. If you like music videos – thank Michael. Thriller, Billy Jean, Beat It – in the early age of MTV (back when they actually played videos), these videos helped set the standard. Like Usher or Justin Timberlake? Heavily influenced by Michael. Ever do the Thriller dance? Thank Michael.
His influence is all over, and his musical legacy is on the same level as Elvis’.
It’s because of Michael that I can appreciate the marriage of music and visual arts. A great song can be enhanced by a great video or a great dance. A sermon or speech can be reinforced by the right song. And for me, it all started the first time I saw the video for Billy Jean.
Thank you Michael. You will not be forgotten.

I’m Bringin’ Servin’ Back

Ok, so as I’m reading other blogs, I find some really funny and neat things. This week, I discovered two different parodies of Justin Timberlake’s SexyBack, and they are hilarious. One was on Dave Ferguson’s blog, and the other is from the SCL blog. I’m posting both for your enjoyment. (If you want to know, the first one is my favorite).

Waiting on the world to change

I think John Mayer is a great artist, and he might just be the next Eric Clapton. I think he’s put out some great songs, and “Waiting on the World to Change” is one that I really enjoy. Over the last few weeks, I have been wrestling with my worldview and trying to see things differently in order to expand what I know. This song popped into my head and I really paid attention to it. For some reason, I realized that it’s a really sad song. If you pay attention to it, the point of view is that we don’t have the power to make a difference. There’s no impetus to do anything because there is no hope. So we’re waiting for the world to change.

I can’t wait that long. The world, if left to its own devices, will never change. We have to take that step. We need to be the difference. We need to be the change in order to cause the change. How do we do that? We share the love of Jesus. We share Him with our friends, our families, our co-workers, the barista at Starbucks, the server at Chili’s – EVERYWHERE we go and with EVERYONE we meet. We won’t do it through legislation, through protests. We will affect change by being relational, by truly loving others without reservation.

Many people profess to “hate the sin, not the sinner.” Unfortunately, many do match their actions to their words. That needs to change, and it needs to start now. We need to show the face of love – we need to be His hands and feet and arms.

We need to stop waiting and just make it happen.
